Since ships could not return empty and light cobble stones were carried in the holds for ballast. In the 1800's the city spread and the stones were used to pave the streets. After the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge the ridge to the south became a prime residential area.  The neighborhoods of Brooklyn Heights and Cobble Hill were home to NY upper and middle class of the time. Lavish and grand brick brownstone buildings were built.
Because the area is Landmarked  the brownstones and brick houses have been restored within historical guidelines that preserve that areas aura and charm.

This apartment is in one such brownstone on Clinton Street near the restored Cobble Hill Park.
