Cobble Hill and Brooklyn Heights still have the flavor of New York in the 1800's. You can almost hear the clip-pity clop of horse hooves and the clank of wagon wheels as you walk along the tree shaded streets or sit on the stoop of the brownstone houses.
Cobble Hill is the high point on the edge of Brooklyn over looking the entrance to New York harbor. In the 1700's New York harbor was far busier exporting goods to Europe than importing. Since ships could not return empty and light cobble stones were carried in the holds for ballast. These were dumped on the hill which became called Cobble Hill. In the 1800's the city spread and the stones were used to pave the streets. After the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge the ridge to the south became a prime residential area. The neighborhoods of Brooklyn Heights and Cobble Hill were home to NY upper and middle class of the time. Lavish and grand brick brownstone buildings were built.
Because the area is Landmarked the brownstones and brick houses have been restored within historical guidelines that preserve that areas aura and charm.
