After the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge the ridge to the south became a prime residential area.  The neighborhoods of Brooklyn Heights and Cobble Hill were home to NY upper and middle class of the time. Lavish and grand brick brownstone buildings were built.
Because the area is Landmarked  the brownstones and brick houses have been restored within historical guidelines that preserve that areas aura and charm.
